Assembleon Range

  1. 1.    ITF Intelligent tape feeders ( PA 2654/xx range)

Intelligent tapefeeders are available for 8 up to 88 mm tape widths. The feeders can

be loaded with 13″ tape reels (optional 15″ reel holder).

Embossed as well as paper tapes according to international standard IEC 60286 – 3rd

edition, can be handled. ITF feeders are also capable of handling PSA foil

types. ITF feeders are indexed by an electrical driven mechanism allowing a highly reliable

uninterrupted feeding process.

Intelligent Tape Feeder Range

Feeder intelligence is available in the following Tape Feeders:

PA2654/0x : ITF2 8mm Intelligent Tape Feeder

PA2654/1x : ITF2 12mm Intelligent Tape Feeder

PA2654/2x : ITF2 16mm Intelligent Tape Feeder

Twin Tape accommodates two 8mm tapes in a single feeder slot, enhancing the support for family setup and increasing productivity Intelligence eliminates incorrect feeder set-up, provides pre-empty reel

warning and is a basis for tracking and tracing · Single handed operation facilitates fast setup · All-in-one feeder concepts; one feeder supports various reels sizes,

pitches and tape types, reducing feeder inventory · Accurate component positioning and precise repeatability for maximum

pick performance · Support from 88 mm tapes to components down to 0201 for wide range of application support · Supports splicing for uninterrupted production · Support tapes based on the IEC 60286-3 specifications

  1. 3.    Feeder intelligence

There are many ways to define feeder intelligence and not all vendors apply the same intelligence

level. And that is not always necessary as well.

A great deal of intelligence function of feeders can be taken over by the system. This is very

common with systems that handle one board at a time. Feeder intelligence can be defined at two

main levels:

Semi-intelligent feeders:

Generally speaking (not always the case) you will have semi-intelligent feeders where the

reel is disconnected from the feeder at all times (basically: Feeders without reel-holders).

Reel information and component count is not carried with the feeder and is lost when

such a feeder is stored away or carried from one line to another. Semi-intelligent feeders

only communicate the feeder ID to the host. This is done when the feeder is placed onto

the feeder bar.

Before the feeder is placed onto a system, the bar code of the feeder is scanned (feeder ID)

and information from a Reel is scanned. Both information is send to the host pick and

place software via a Setup Verification Software package (not via the feeder interface).

When the feeder is placed onto the feeder bar, the pick and place machine detects this (it

continuously checks feeder positions) and reads the feeder ID. When the ID was scanned

before, it will recognize this and the pick and place machine then knows exactly what

component is on that feeder.

So, basically, semi-intelligent feeders have, and communicate, the feeder ID only.

Full-intelligent feeders:

Generally speaking you will have full-intelligent feeders where the reel is connected to

the feeder at all times (so: Feeders with reel-holders). Reel information and component

count is carried with the feeder and is remembered when the feeder is stored off-line or

when the feeder is transferred from one pick and place machine to another. In contrast to

the Semi-intelligent feeders, the pick and place machine reads all information from the

feeder when it detects a new feeder. It then verifies this against the placement program

(action spec) and checks its validity. When invalid, it will tell the operator to place the

feeder into the correct feeder slot. As the component count and reel information is

carried along with the feeder, it will continue where it ended the last time it was used.

This bar-code feeder ID

is also stored in the

feeder.

ITF and TTF feeder intelligence

The intelligence of ITF/TTF tape feeders is defined as follows:

A feeder is intelligent when it has the capability to:

·  Control its own behavior

·  Communicate via a defined communication interface (data, events, characteristics of the

feeder, commands)

·  Store data into non-volatile memory.

Controlling its own behavior

In a certain way, it means that it is a ‘grown-up’ feeder. It functions completely independent and it

does not require a pick and placement machine to tell what to do and how to do it.

The feeder will react to a nozzle and will know that a pick and placement machine has performed a

pick. After this, the feeder will, by itself, address all functions necessary to present the next

component. It will drive the motors and will check if they are running well. It will check if the

component is positioned correctly, it will count down by itself how many components are left in

the reel and it will remember the total number of indexes it has made so far. All of this is done in

the feeder and by the feeder itself.

Communicate via a defined communication interface.

Grown-up also means that you can talk, but this should be done in a language the machines

understand. This language is the CAN protocol. This language is fixed defined as

the feeder platform language.

All current intelligent feeders use this protocol and all future intelligent feeders will be able to

communicate in the same manner.

Store data into non-volatile memory.

Using a fixed set of commands and functions limits the flexibility of intelligence. Any external

equipment should be able to do certain things with the feeder as they wish. These programs store

their own particular data into the feeder and use it according to their needs.

To support this maximum flexibility, empty non-volatile memory is available in the intelligent

feeders for these purposes.

Data is always kept within the feeder until it is erased by a host system. This way, additional

information is transferred along with the feeder when moving from one line to another. Identical

external equipment can read the data for further use without the need to re-program the feeder.
